After a picture of an 11-year-old boy with his mouth taped shut surfaced, the North Carolina teacher responsible has reportedly resigned.

The 11-year-old had sent his mom, Catherine Webster, a picture on February 13th from his sixth-grade classroom at Smithfield Middle School. In the photo, he was seen with his lips wrapped with several strands of blue painter’s tape after he was supposedly too noisy during class. She later spoke with WRAL-TV.

Webster attested that her son was “humiliated” and that she “didn’t know what to do.”

The sixth-grader was reportedly taped up during the start of class, “forced to sit through the entire period like that.” In addition, two other classmates were put through the same ordeal on the same day.

“His teacher never once called me to discuss his behavior, so I wasn’t aware he was a problem for her,” Webster said.

This infuriated the mother which prompted her to immediately notify the school’s administration.

“We can confirm that whenever such allegations arise, our administration responds swiftly by investigating the allegations and, sometimes, by removing staff from classrooms pending completion of a thorough review,” the school administrators said in a statement.

Several further claims against the instructor were discovered during an inquiry by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, but after speaking with the district attorney, it was decided that an assault charge was not necessary.

The teacher in subject has yet to be identified.
