The House has failed to block a vote to oust Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.

On Tuesday, Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) began the first step of his mission to remove McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his post. The House of Representatives also failed to table a vote to stop the motion.

The vote to move forward with the motion to oust him was 209-to-218.

Every Democrat cast a “nay” vote or abstained, and 11 Republicans opposed the move to table, with two Republicans remaining silent.

The 11 Republicans included Eli Crane (R-Ariz.), Ken Buck (R-Colo.), Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), matt Rosendale (R-Mont.), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Bob Good (R-Va.), Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), Cory Mills (R-Fla.) and Warren Davidson (R-Ohio).

After the vote moved the motion forward, the House had an hour to debate the motion to vacate the speaker’s chair.

When Gaetz finally took the floor, he was extremely critical of McCarthy’s leadership.

“Chaos is Speaker McCarthy,” he asserted. “Chaos is somebody who we cannot trust with their word.”

“Kevin McCarthy said something to all of us at one point or another, that he didn’t really mean and never intended to live up to,” he continued.

Gaetz first filed a “motion to vacate” on Monday night. The Floridian has consistently criticized the speaker’s handing of spending, the budget, and also stated that the California native has “at one point or another… lied to all of us.”

The final vote is expected to take place on Tuesday afternoon.
