According to results disclosed on Sunday, India’s popular Hindu nationalist party won in three of four state elections, suggesting that India’s prime minister will succeed in a third consecutive term next year.

India’s Hindu nationalist party succeeded in three of four state elections, according to outcomes of an essential vote that put the main opposition party against that of Modi before national polls in 2024.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party also gained control of Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan states in the Indian National Congress.

Modi was reelected in Madhya Pradesh, which is a state in central India, for a fifth term, according to the election commission’s website.

The party easily won in the Telangana state, which is controlled by powerful Telangana Rashtra Samithi, and is well-known for opposing the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Votes will be counted on Monday in Mizoram, the fifth state where the Bharatiya Janata Party’s regional ally, the Mizo National Front, is in power.

The polls in the five states took place last month, with over 160 million qualified voters. The elections in India are normally performed in phases owing to the significantly large population.

India’s Prime Minister thanked those who voted for “their unwavering support” in the particular states where his party was successful.

“The results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan indicate that the people of India are firmly with politics of good governance and development, which the @BJP4India stands for,” Modi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Rahul Gandhi, who is the Congress leader, acknowledged defeat in the three states where his party was unsuccessful.

“The battle of ideology will continue,” Gandhi wrote on X, and thanked the people of Telangana, which is where his party triumphed.

As a result of the BJP’s success, Modi walked among BJP supporters who gave him flower petals, chanting “Long live Mother India” and other chants. In a speech, Modi said that the results were “a victory for honesty, transparency and good governance.”

Modi and his party have remained well-known and admired on a national level after almost 10 years in office, with surveys showing that he will most likely win a third consecutive term in 2024.
