House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has announced that he dropped out of the race for Speaker of the House.

On Thursday, Scalise (R-La.) dropped out of the race for Speaker just one day after he had won the Republican nomination for the role. However, many GOP members stated that they would not vote for him on the House floor.
“It’s been quite a journey. And there’s still a long way to go. I just share with my colleagues that I’m withdrawing my name as a candidate for the speaker designee,” Scalise said.
He proceeded to add that the country is counting on them to come back together and that “his House of Representatives needs a Speaker and we need to open up the House again. But clearly, not everybody is there. And there’s still schisms that have to get resolved.”
The decision was announced following a GOP closed-door meeting on Thursday evening.
However, Scalise stated that he will remain in his role as House Majority Leader. He has no plans to endorse another speaker candidate at this time.
